• India has a road network of over 4,689,842 kilometres making it the second largest road network in the world. But not all roads in India are easy to ride on.

•  The following is the list of the 8 most scary & dangerous motorable roads in India. 

•  All of the roads listed below are located in the northern region of India and above an average sea level of 3000 m.  

•  Most of them are built and maintained by the Indian Army.

                                               8) Shimla to Manali Route:

•  It’s a 265 km long route that connects Shimla and Manali (Himachal Pradesh, India.

•  Surrounded by mountains on one side and Bias river on the other, this route makes way into our list for its popularity.

•  It has lots of dangerous turns and narrow passages making it one of the hardest routes across India.

   Zoji Lais a high mountain pass in Kashmir, India  located on the Indian National Highway between Srinagar and Leh in the western section of the Himalayan mountain range.

Zoji La is 9 km from Sonamarg and provides a vital link between Ladakh and Kashmir. It runs at an elevation of approximately 3,528 metres (11,575 ft).  

6.Rohtang Pass:

• Rohtang Pass, is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km from Manali. It connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh, India.

•  It offes a panaroma and spectacular mountain view. There are beautiful sights of glaciers, peaks and Chandra river flowing down the Lahul valley. It has elevation of about 3,979 m.

5.Pangong Tso:

                  The road to Pangong Tso is situated at a height of about 4,350 m (14,270 ft).

It is 134 km (83 mi) long and extends from India to Tibet. It is a popular film shooting location, recent films being shot are Jab Tak Hai Jaan and 3 Idiots .

4.Ladakh Highway:

• The Leh–Manali Highwayis a 490 km highway in northern India connecting Lehin Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir state and Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

•  It is open for only about four and a half months in a year in summer between May or June, when the snow is cleared by the Border Road Organisation of Indian army, and mid-October.

• The average elevation of Leh-Manali highway is more than 4,000 m (13,000 feet)and its highest elevation is 5,328 m (17,480 ft) at Tanglang La mountain pass. 

• It is flanked by mountain ranges on both sides featuring some stunning sand and rock natural formations.

                                                                 3) Gata Loops:

• Gata loops is one of the lesser known roads India. 

• It is a series of hairpin bends that takes you to the top of the third high altitude pass, Nakee La, at a height of nearly 16000 ft.

•  The scenery around is breath taking but has a very difficult ascent. 

2.Chang La :

• It is a high mountain pass in Ladakh, India. It has the elevation of 5,360 m or 17,590 ft.

• . It is the third highest motorable road in the world. The name literally mean ‘Pass toward South.’

•  The Chang La(Pass) is the main gateway for the Changthang Plateau situated in the Himalayas. 

• The Indian Army closely monitors the pass and also serves hot tea to the tourists who visit the road!

 

                                                                    1.Khardung La:

• Khardung La is a high mountain pass in Ladakh region.

•  It is claimed to be around 5,602 m or 18,379 ft high making it the world’s largest motorable road and has been listed in the Guinness World Records.

•  It lies on the major caravan route from Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia.

•  Being at such a high altitude it is quiet dangerous and scary for tourists visiting the pass . !
